The Bodycast studio offer a new mobile casting service for Bedford and surrounding villages for single appointments. We are happy to travel further afield to: Northampton, Milton Keynes, Luton and Peterborough. We require a group booking of six or more to travel to these areas.

If you are looking for a special and unique gift then this is it. Baby hands and feet, Parent and baby hands, Family hands and Wedding hands we can cast them all for you.

Casting Experience - Once we arrive to your appointment, each cast takes us around ten minutes, when we have taken the mould we will bring the mould back to our studio to make the final cast. Every cast will be painted and finished to the highest standard. The final casts will be ready 10 - 14 days after your appointment.

We will call you when they are ready to arrange a suitable time for us to deliver them to you.

Baby & Child Casting Kits - The Facts

1. Will it hurt my baby?
Absolutely not. Your baby will be putting his or her hand or foot into a soft creamy mixture which will become firm but stay flexible after just one minute (during which time they are free to wriggle). The hand or foot then slides easily and cleanly out of the mould. The moulding powder is mixed with cold water which may cause momentary surprise.

2. Could my baby be allergic to the moulding agent?
The moulding powder is a complete natural product (made from seaweed) and is hypo-allergenic, non-toxic and 100 biodegradable. It is widely used within the medical profession for taking skin and tooth impressions.

3. How long does it take?
It takes no longer than 1 minute for the mould mixture to set once the hand or foot is placed in the casting bag. The entire process takes no longer than 5 minutes.

4. Does my baby need to be asleep?
No. Because we use a soft casting bag rather than a fixed container for babies and small children, they are free to wriggle about during the process. A musical toy or cheerful distraction can help but babies usually love to watch what's going on.

5. What happens if my baby wriggles?
Not a problem - moving their fingers and toes can help to disperse air bubbles in the mixture. When the mixture is close to setting it will be difficult for the baby to move for a just a second or two (this is when the impression is taken). Remember, the moulding process takes less than 1 minute.

6. Is the process very messy?
No. Once the mixture sets it forms a rubber-like mould which peels easily from the skin and baby's hand or foot will emerge completely clean. We recommend doing home castings in the kitchen so that any mixture, once set, will peel cleanly away from smooth surfaces. Should any mixture get onto clothes, it should peel away easily when dry.

7. Are the home casting kits easy to use?
Absolutely. Read the easy to follow instructions or access our step-by-step visual guide with the password contained in your kit. Having a helper can make things a little easier, but your baby castings will be so much more rewarding when you have done them yourself.

8. How many casts can I do with one baby's hand & foot kit?
You can cast one hand + one foot, two hands or two feet.

9. Can I buy more moulding agent & plaster?
Yes. We sell a range of refill packs which will enable you to cast the same quantities as your original kit

The Casting Process for Pregnant Bellies

The casting procedure is usually done 2 - 6 weeks before your due date, sooner if you carry big or are expecting more than one baby. The entire casting process takes approximately 45 minutes to 1 1/2 hours - depending on how much of your body you plan to cast. Most women are unclothed to get a more accurate replica of their body. However, wearing undergarments is an option as well. Just before the start of the casting process, you are asked to apply Vaseline or another lubricant to your body where the plaster-cloth will come in contact. The lubricant creates a barrier between your skin and the plaster-cloth, so that when it hardens it can be removed easily. As the warm plaster-cloth is applied it is smoothed to blend the plaster and conformed to your body contours. All this is done while you are seated comfortably in a supported position.

The casting material will begin to harden on your body as Debra covers the rest of your torso. Ideally, you stay as still as is comfortable and breathe normally. Cracks from breathing, laughter or the moving baby are normal and can be repaired easily once the cast is removed.

To remove the cast, Debra gently breaks the seal around the edges with her fingers, holds the cast firmly, and carefully removes it from your torso as you wriggle out of it. Once it is off your body it is supported while it dries further. To make a cast that is "ready-to-hang" typically takes 1 - 2 weeks. Depending on how you want the product finished, it may take longer.

It is a remarkably simple and inexpensive project, although it's just a little messy! Find out more about this pregnancy art rapidly gaining in popularity.

Why a Belly Cast?
A photo captures your body's changes two dimensionally, but a belly cast adds the dramatic third dimension of depth. Although this is a little known way to capture your pregnant body's dimensions it is also an incredibly wonderful art form. Even if you are uncertain about doing this kind of birth art, do it anyway. Preparation

What You Will Need
One Belly Cast Kit for basic breast and belly or the Belly Cast Plus Kit to include upper arms, shoulders and upper 1/3 of thighs. You can order these kits through www.bodycast-studio.co.uk or by calling the bodyc ast studio on 01234 822229

Sculptor
Put on old clothes or use an apron and roll up your sleeves. Take off any jewellery.
Cover the floor with the drop cloth. Make sure the room is warm but well ventilated.
Assemble supplies and fill the pan or bucket with warm water.
Cut the plaster bandages into strips approximately 6, 10 and 14 inches long.
Generously apply lubrication to the mother's breasts, belly (neck/arms/thighs), going no more than half way around her sides and just above the pubic hair. If necessary, use cotton padding to cover armpit, belly or pubic hair. (If you don't use enough lubrication, remind the mother to use one of her pain techniques as her hair is being pulled out when the cast comes off!) :o)

Mother
Choose Your Pose.
Standing or sitting on the edge of a seat, will result in a more round, more full-bodied sculpture. Experiment with various poses: lean forward, to one side or back, or against the wall-find the shape/pose you want to preserve. Assume a position in which you can remain fairly still for about 20 minutes. Don't lie down!! This position produces a flattened breast-belly sculpture.
Creation
Glide one plaster strip at a time through the water for a few seconds. Never let go of the strip, keeping it taut, open and flat, (don't let it fold or twist).
As you pull them up from the water, gently squeeze out the excess water by running your index and middle fingers down the strip.
Apply the strip to the mother's body. Smoothing and over lapping the strips in various directions strengthens the body cast.
Work Quickly because the plaster begins to set (dry), and the cast begins to separate from her body about 10 to 15 minutes after you begin.
When you are finished applying the strips, allow the cast to dry for about five minutes, then remove. Have her help by moving and wiggling loosen the cast as you ease it off at the edges.
Decoration
The body cast will need about 24-48 hours to dry completely before you begin decorating it. It may mold if you decide to decorate it before it is done drying.
Before painting or decorating, smooth the surfaces of the cast by applying a thin coat made from a pasty mixture of plaster of Paris or paint it with gesso. For a very smooth finish, sand with the wire mesh.
There is no end to the possibilities: paint, collage with your baby's photos or magazine cut-outs, tissue paper designs, dried flowers, beads, feathers, or written messages.
After your baby is born, you can add footprints (right where he/she used to kick you under the ribs) on the sculpture with ink or paint, or make an impression of the footprint in wet plaster on the cast.

Finally, spray or paint with the shellac, lacquer or glaze to finish. If you are doing this yourself, do so only in a well-ventilated area, preferably outdoors.

Adult Castings - The Facts

1. Will it hurt?
Not at all. There may be momentary surprise from the temperature of the moulding mixture when it is first applied, as cold water is used to slow down the setting time.

2. Could I have an allergic reaction?
The moulding powder is a complete natural product (made from seaweed) and is hypo-allergenic, non-toxic and 100 biodegradable. It is widely used within the medical profession for taking skin and tooth impressions)

3. How long does a professional studio casting take?
The normal time for an adult casting is between 25 and 45 minutes depending on the body part being cast, and how quickly we can find the right pose.

4. I have a hairy chest. Can I still cast my torso?
Yes. Before the mixture is applied, the skin is rubbed with baby oil or in the case of very hairy areas, vaseline. This allows the mould to be removed easily without pulling at the hair.

5. How long before a studio casting is ready to collect? Once we have taken the mould, it usually takes us a week to cast, dry, prepare and paint the casting. Because the casts are quite fragile, we do not send them in the post so you will need to collect your cast from our studio.

6. When we cast our hands, is it safe to wear our wedding rings? Yes. In fact, hands look better with rings and add to the character of the casting. Your hands and jewellery will come cleanly out of the mould and will not damage the jewellery in any way.

7. I am thinking of casting my pregnant belly but could it hurt my baby? Not at all. The moulding agent does not restrict your belly in any way and your baby is free to move about whilst the cast is being taken.

8. Why would I want a cast of a certain part of my body? Apart from the fun side of having a great memento or truly personal gift for a partner, a family hands cast, for example, makes a great keepsake to be treasured as you grow older.

We have cast people who are overweight and determined to change the way they look so before-and-after castings are a great incentive.

Women thinking of a breast enlargement or reduction have the ideal opportunity to capture their old and new looks.

Men determined to get a rippling muscles or a six-pack are spurred on by before-and-after castings. Especially when the new torso casting takes pride of place in the home.

On a more serious note, women who are to undergo a mastectomy or those having other body changing operations (which, for instance, will leave them scarred) seek comfort in having a cast done before the event. 9. Are the home kits really that easy to use? Yes. As long as you read the easy-to-follow instructions and the 'read this first' guide, not much can go wrong.

10. Can I cast myself or will I need help?You will need help, as you will not be able to move around once the mixture has been spread on your body. If you are buying a kit as a gift for a friend or family, be willing to do the cast for them - it's really good fun.

Baby & Child Castings - The Facts

1. Will it hurt my baby?
Absolutely not. Your baby will be putting his or her hand or foot into a soft creamy mixture which will become firm but stay flexible after just one minute (during which time they are free to wriggle). The hand or foot then slides easily and cleanly out of the mould. The moulding powder is mixed with cold water which may cause momentary surprise.

2.Could my baby be allergic to the moulding agent?
The moulding powder is a complete natural product (made from seaweed) and is hypo-allergenic, non-toxic and 100 biodegradable. It is widely used within the medical profession for taking skin and tooth impressions.

3. How long does it take?
It takes no longer than 1 minute for the mould mixture to set once the hand or foot is placed in the casting bag. The entire process takes no longer than 5 minutes.

4. Does my baby need to be asleep?
No. Because we use a soft casting bag rather than a fixed container for babies and small children, they are free to wriggle about during the process. A musical toy or cheerful distraction can help but babies usually love to watch what's going on.

5. What happens if my baby wriggles?
Not a problem - moving their fingers and toes can help to disperse air bubbles in the mixture. When the mixture is close to setting it will be difficult for the baby to move for a just a second or two (this is when the impression is taken). Remember, the moulding process takes less than 1 minute.

6. Is the process very messy?
No. Once the mixture sets it forms a rubber-like mould which peels easily from the skin and baby's hand or foot will emerge completely clean. We recommend doing home castings in the kitchen so that any mixture, once set, will peel cleanly away from smooth surfaces. Should any mixture get onto clothes, it should peel away easily when dry.

7. Are the home casting kits easy to use?
Absolutely. Read the easy to follow instructions or access our step-by-step visual guide with the password contained in your kit. Having a helper can make things a little easier, but your baby castings will be so much more rewarding when you have done them yourself.

8. How many casts can I do with one baby's hand & foot kit?
You can cast one hand + one foot, two hands or two feet.

9. Can I buy more moulding agent & plaster?
Yes. We sell a range of refill packs which will enable you to cast the same quantities as your original kit.

Today I get a phone call from the ownner of the Body Cast Studio to say she is not able to get to one of her casting appointments , it turns out it was a commission to cast Tara Palmer-Tomkinson Legs. As you can guess I said Yes !

After arriving at a studio in west London , Tara turned up looking a little tired , but after an hour in make-up she looked like the T.P-T we all know and love !

I got straight down to the job of rubbing baby oil into her leg ready to have the alginate mix pasted onto her leg, we casted from her hip to her angle , and the cast came out really well. We then went on to cast a Model called Normandie Keith , you can see her picture here also :-

The casting was for a Charity event sponsored by Tesco called Race for Life in aid of Cancer Research.

What Is Bodycasting ?

Lifecasting or bodycasting is the art of taking moulds directly from the human body. It is an ancient art form dating back to the time of the Egyptians where body casts were made as a means of transport into the next world.

So , what is this bodycasting all about anyway ?
basically the body casting process involves mixing up a compound of alginate and either plunging a part of the body into the mix , and waiting for it to set into a flexible mould for the plaster , or pasting it onto the body and building up a thick layer of the moulding agent , which is then covered in plaster bandages , also called mod rock , to provide a firm base to help lift the mould away from the body.

The resulting mould can then have plaster , resin , or silicone ito it to create your 3D cast of the part of the body you moulded. This also has a technique associated with getting a good mould, if you purchase a kit to do it there will be instructions on doing this in the kit, I won't bore you with it here.

There are loads of websites with guides telling you how to do it at home , while this is possible , its an exact science and if you dont have the right mix of compounds like alginate and plaster , it is never going to work properly and only going to disapoint you with the resulting mould. If your thinking of doing it , your best bet it to get a pre prepared kit for doing it or ask someone who professionally does it or at least has already done it to help you , experience counts for everything.

We were so impressed with the idea and product , we decided to buy it, no not buy the product , we bought the company ! The pressure was now on to market this website and get the product from being a local shop to a nationwide and possible worldwide name.

Since then body casting has taken of in a big way, and shops and website are cropping up everywhere , offering more and more variation on the product. Pregnancy for posterity Belly casts, the modern mother's version of bronzed baby booties, are so popular now, they're even being done at baby showers!

"I was nervous that it might feel uncomfortable," says Michelle Plant, who at 34 weeks pregnant, leaning back on a supporting chair, wearing nothing but a pair of black underwear. She will remain in this position for about half an hour, until her breasts and belly are covered with two layers one of alginate and the other plasterstrips that will eventually form a cast of her tumescent body.

"What does it feel like? It feels a little like I'm in Pilates class at the gym, even though I haven't been to the gym in months. I know it sounds funny, but it's that same tightness -- not uncomfortable, just a sense of heaviness about your body," says Plant, a 34-year-old from Ancaster, Ont., who is due at the end of this month.

These kinds of pregnancy casts have also been done for couples, where the man's hands are wrapped around the belly; mothers and daughters, where the unborn female babe has been part of a pre-birth, three-generations image, and even for an unusual take on the traditional baby shower.

The belly casts, belly masks or pregnancy body casts range from the basic do-it-yourself kits available in craft stores and by mail order, all the way up to a full-service, spa-like experience that includes a customized artistic finish of the cast.
It is the most popular item offered online at Your Birth Connection, averaging about 15 or 20 sales a day. Full-service belly casts, such as the one that Plant is undergoing, can run as high as £300, depending on the artistic finish.

Most of these casts preserve a full-frontal view of the swelling form all the way down from the top of the chest to the top of the thighs.

They have become the modern mother's version of bronzed baby booties. The popularity of the belly cast symbolizes a significant shift in attitude about pregnancy, replacing a tradition that commemorates the wonder of the tiny newborn with one that focuses on the mother and her life-giving body.

"A belly cast is an amazing way to memorialize your pregnant shape," says one online belly casting company.

"This is a wonderful way to honour and preserve the amazing reality of how your body changed to grow a baby," trumpets another. "A photo captures your body's changes two dimensionally, but a belly cast adds the dramatic third dimension of depth. In the years to come, you can view it from all angles, touch the curves, and explore the inner concavity where your baby curled up waiting to be born."

It is all about "women celebrating their bodies and the fact that they've got a life growing in there."

She uses a medical bandage that is plaster-infused, similar to those used to make old arm and leg casts. She started out using a craft product but found it was too messy, and frowns on using old-fashioned plaster casting directly on the skin because it can cause a burning sensation.

As she works, she slides the plaster strips through warm water and, keeping them taut, applies each one to Plant's body. She works quickly and deftly, since it doesn't take long for the plaster to set (the cast can begin to separate from the body about 15 or 20 minutes after starting, which is why speed is critical). When it's ready, Balaz coaxes the belly cast away from the body by pulling on it lightly as Plant gently shrugs it off.

She has painted everything from fairyland scenes to leopard-skin prints on her finished casts. She has decoupaged baby's ultrasound picture onto the belly cast, and has just finished one cast that the client wanted done in a tie-dye effect.

Plant wants hers to be painted a warm bronzy gold: "I have a 24-foot living room and I was thinking of hanging it on one of the empty walls, a bit nearer the back, so you have to be my friend to see it. I don't exactly want everyone who comes to the door to catch a glimpse of my body.

"I know this is not for everybody," she says. "My sister-in-law is pregnant and she is just disgusted by it."

The belly casting is one of her Christmas presents from her husband -- "He thinks I'm crazy, but he knows I wanted to do something like this."

She first heard about the concept on The Baby Channel on TV,

"Sue's husband came up to me and said, 'Excuse me, are you pregnant?' I was about 16 weeks, but I wasn't really showing. I was wearing this funky halter top and I was thrilled that someone noticed my belly," Plant recalls. "He said, 'You should see my wife, she's in the business,' and he wrote it down on a napkin."

Melanie Dubruiel, of Hamilton, had a belly casting baby shower about a month before she was due with her first child, Jack.

"There were about 20 women all crowded in this one room at my mother's house while this was being done. I didn't think about it until the time, and then I thought it was going to be really embarrassing, but it was just fine," says Dubruiel, who is 20.

For the most part, the women at the shower -- her friends, her mother's friends, relatives, and even her aunts -- just kept talking among themselves, snacking and drinking while Dubruiel was lined with plaster.

She says she is normally quite a shy person, and so insisted on wearing a bra for the plaster (even though belly casting purists insist the unadorned breast is a better representation of the pregnant form) and having Balaz apply the first layer over her breasts in the privacy of a washroom before she came out for the full shower to see.

Her son "told everyone at school today that I was going out to get plastered," she laughs. "I had to explain to his teacher that I was getting plastered the only way I could at this stage."

Fast: My client's comfort is always our first consideration. Holding a pose for an extended period of time can be uncomfortable even for a professional model. Our process is very quick. Most molds take less than 30 minutes to complete. Once the mold is removed, the bodycasting sculpture is cast and the final sculpture is left to dry for a couple of weeks and then sprayed and patinaed ready for you to take home or I could have the piece cast in bronze.
